The SWAC Art Hub for Teens is open to teens, ages 12-18 (middle school and high school), who are developing as visual artists, digital creators, writers/literary artists, and/or hand crafters/makers. On the first day of class, we assist them in developing an Artist’s Plan that involves deciding on the project(s) that they will work on over the duration of the program. In addition to creating an Artist Plan, each session will include a 30-45 minute artist lesson. Please take a look at the sample lesson plans below for an idea. Regardless of your teen’s creative/artistic interests, we think our lessons can help all teens build good studio habits on their way to becoming well-rounded artists.
Before or after the lesson, teens will have art studio time where they will be expected to work on their Artist Plan. Traditional art materials and mediums are included, as well as plenty of plug-in ports for writers or digital artists to bring their own plug-in device. During studio time, we also provide creative guidance which involves giving teens individualized micro-lessons and tips, helping them turn “mistakes” into opportunities, or helping them work through moments of self-doubt. What we know at SWAC is that when developing artists are given fundamental skill lessons, are expected to make and deliver on their own selected plans, and are given a block of dedicated studio time to focus on projects, they can begin to find their creative voice and most importantly, they can begin to trust that voice. To celebrate the journey, teens are given the opportunity to feature their work at a Showcase that family and friends are invited to on the last day of the program. Artists will be encouraged (not required) to interact with attendees and share their thoughts about their work. It is a wonderful, yet challenging journey that we believe all teens can enjoy.
During Friday sessions, the 30-45 minute artist lesson of the day will start at 5pm and during Saturday sessions, the lesson will begin at 11:30am. Please note that how much time your teen spends in the art studio beyond the lesson time is up to them. It’s their studio and their Artist Plan to achieve so they can spend as much as 3 hours in the studio during sessions, but spending all 3 hours at the studio is not required. We recommend at least 1.5 hours of project time in addition to the lesson to really get the most out of it.
